Chicken for two - PART TWO

Thursday 3 December 2009
heeey, if you haven't read part one, scroll down the page, because then you wouldn't understand a thing.

DAY FOUR

7:56 p.m.

It was extremely weird to go to work and not find her there. I know I've seen her just once, but something was telling me I should find her... That maybe she was the one. Ok, I know that may seems a bit to advanced to say, but I've never felt this way about a girl before.

And we just only met for seconds, our eyes just glanced at each other for fractions of seconds, and our skins just touched by a small instant – nevertheless, it was enough to make me go all crazy for her.

Was I ever going to meet her again?

DAY FIVE

5:57 a.m.

Again with the insomnia. I have already tried everything – teas, relaxing songs, warm milk, coutning sheep, smoking pot – and nothing was able to get me sleep. There was just only one thing left to do; and if I'm not sleeping in the next day, I shall try it.

And the new method I'm talking off is alcohol.

DAY SIX

7:32 p.m.

If you are wondering – it worked as marvelous. I fell on my bed fast asleep before being able to take my clothes off, but I didn't care. If getting hammed means me getting some sleep, this is the way it's going to be.

However, getting constantly drunk wasn't helping my life at all. Once again, I was late for work, I was playing with the risk of getting fired and also was making my mind get really confused. Like, yesterday, at my break during the expedient, I decided to hang out in the club where I worked and ended up drinking a bit too much. And this other bloke tried to steal my vodka! Seriously, I didn't think twice – I punched the guy right on the face without even looking directly at him and we fell on the ground, punching and kicking each other.

And yes, for the first time of my life I've gotten into a fight and I got out of it victoriously.

Yay me.

“You're late” Selene said.

I didn't notice the unusual stare she was looking for me. I didn't care.

“I know”

3:23 a.m.

“Oi, Alex, wait up for me!”, Selene called after me when I was leaving the club.

She was trying to find the key on his pocket, and as soon as she did, she closed the door to her club and she hurried to get on my side. The weather was freezing, so she put her scar around her neck and buttoned her coat, and put her hands on her pockets. I watched as a smoke came out of my mouth – I know this was rather childish, but hey, it was still fun!

“Hey-ah, Selene”, I greeted her as soon as she got to my side.

It was already dark – and the pole lights on the street were broken, so we didn't have a right clear view on our front. It would be rather a romantic scene if at least I had the woman I was thinking of at my side...

Sigh.

“I was wondering...”, Selene said, her voice bringing me back to Earth; lately I seemed to be in another planet. “If any one day we could hang out together. Like, outside work”

I shouldered.

“Yeah, it would be fun”

I was looking at the moon right on front of me – full moon. Perfect for a romance.

Grrrrr. I seriously need to stop thinking about her.

“Yeah, it would be fun.” Selene said, with a smile on her lips. She seemed a bit too jumpily and excited for my liking. “So... what do you think of doing?”

Then, something caught my attention. A woman passed through us – she was wearing a hood over her head, but I could clearly see her curls falling like waves on front of her bust. She was small and slim – and looked exactly like Nina.

I didn't think twice; I hurried until her, leaving Selene talking to herself, and as soon as I reached her, I put my hand on her shoulder. Panting, I tried to call her, but when she turned around I saw that it wasn't her. It was just someone else.

“Hm, sorry”, I apologized as the woman glanced at me with a scared and disgusted look. She turned back and ran out of there, thinking I would be some kind of sexual predator or something like that.

I walked back until the place I left Selene – she had a puzzled expression on her face – but I wasn't in the mood for talking right now. I said goodbye and I took the another corner, ignoring the fact that she was calling me in the dead of the night.

DAY SEVEN

2:26 p.m.

“You will love me forever, Alex”, Bob said while he forked his sausage and put it on his mouth, chewing it right after. “I know you will”

I glanced up at Bob. He wasn't much a fan of irony or sarcasm; he was a rather calm and bound to earth guy. If he was using sarcasm – it meant something good or really bad.

“Shoot”, I said, fearing what he would answer me. I was already training my mind psychologically so that it would be ready for whatever he was going to say. “But just be nice”

Bob stretched himself, increasing the suspense that was already in the air. He looked at me intensively, and squinted his eyes just a bit.

“I know where she works”

I raised one eyebrow. What was he saying?

“The girl you can't stop thinking about. Nora, wasn't that her name?”

“Nina!” I exalted, getting up from my chair a bit unexpectedly, making all the other customers on the bakery to look at me. “WHERE? TELL ME RIGHT NOW, MR. HARDY!”

Bob backed off, laughing at my reaction. He pointed at my chair, indicating for me to sit down once again.

“First, calm down. Then I shall think if I should give this for free or for something in trade of it” Bob said, taking a small sip out of his beer and then intertwining his fingers, looking at me with his eyebrows raised.

Damn. I hate when Bob is in the mood for games.

“What do you want, Hardy?”

“Try me”

Oh my god. That was killing me. Knowing that I could easily have the answer, and there he was, Robert Hardy, my obstacle to getting to Nina.

That bastard.

“If we ever get famous with our new band project, I'll let you always get the biggest room of the hotels and such.” I answered him “I'll do anything you want. I'LL LET YOU EAT THE CAKE!”

OH NO. I should have remained in silence! For weeks I had the desire to eat that cake from this old bakery and now that I had finally had the chance... There was Robert Hardy.

That bastard.

He smiled and he took the plate of the slice of cake right on front of me and eat a small piece of it, making a very satisfied and pleasureful face after chewing it.

“Hmmmm, indeed this cake taste like heaven”, he said, mocking me.

“Enough with this, Robert. Now answer me – where does she work?”

He didn't say anything; he only pointed at a restaurant right on the front street, where little tables covered with white sheets were situated on the sidewalk, with a rather fancy and comfy look; and there was a woman serving the clients outside the restaurant.

My heart skipped a beat.

It was Nina.

“Couldn't have you just pointed me there?!”

“Nah, that would have been too easy”, Bob said, taking another greedy piece of the cake and then eating it right after. “And after all, I wanted to try this cake.”

I rolled my eyes and I put some money on top of the table, to pay for my part – and I didn't pay for the cake, tehee – I ran off there before Bob could stop me. Even if the light was on, I ran through the street, taking care for not be hit by a car, and I reached the other pavement.

Wow, my heart was beating fast. Maybe it was all that adrenaline rush after passing through a near death experience.

She was attending an old couple near a empty table – and before anyone could sit there, I hurried and sat on the wooden chair.

And she turned around.

And asked what I would order.

My hear kept beating fast. I couldn't think straight – all that time, and I haven't thought of what I was going to say to her. Oh dear; I was a complete mess, a lost case.

“Wait a minute – aren't you Alex?” she said, remembering me. “From Le Chateau?”

OH MY GOD SHE REMEBERED ME.

Breathe, Alex, breathe.

Remember you are not a psychopath stalker.

“Yeah, it's me. Hi, Nina!” I tried to say as calm as possible. But it actually went something like “Yeahit'smehiNina!

Does that sound a bit Japanese to you as it did for me?

She frowned, and I repeated the sentence as slow as possible so that she could understand. Damn, I needed to chill!

Hey, why did you quit work?”, I asked.

Somewhere, in the deep of my mind, I thought she quitted working at the Le Chateau because of me. And I was afraid of her answer.

However, her confusion surprised me even more.

I didn't quit”, she answered, with her thin eyebrows raised. “Selene fired me”

Wait – what?” I choked on my own saliva “Selene fired you?”

All of a sudden, every single piece of the puzzle started to join – all those smiles, all those jokes, all those innocent flirtation – they weren't innocent at all.

Selene still had feelings for me?

Was this the reason why she invited me to hang out these days? Oh dear, I thought it would be just something casual, between friends... But she wanted more! How could I be so blind to see? Stupid, stupid Alex! Now Nina was fired because of you! You should've seen the signs, you idiot!

Wait – mental verbal-insult wasn't going to help anything.

She suddenly smiled at me – maybe she was finding it a bit funny the way I was acting – and she passed her fingers through her curls, her face slowly getting red by time when she noticed I was looking at her.

I should forget this whole thing about Selene and just concentrate on the fact that Nina was on front of me.

“Well... Are you going to order something?”, she asked, when she saw that her boss was looking at her with a rather reproving tone.

Actually, I wasn't going to order; I just needed to get her attention. However, I was filled with a sudden idea that got my amazed by my own creativity and intelligence. I smirked and smilled at her, seeing her beautiful face colored by the sun, that was creeping right behind her, giving her an angelical aura.

“Hm, yeah”, I put on my thoughtful look for a moment. “Hm... Chicken for two?”

Her smile faded.

“Are you waiting for someone?!”, her tone was almost as disappointing and sad.

“It depends.”, I answered her, still with the smile on my lips. She puzzled, confused, not understanding my answer – and that made me smile widen. “Will you join me for dinner tonight?”

She smiled at me and she made the same thoughtful and mocking face I did, putting her finger on her chin, and she looked up, like she was considering my offer.

“Hm... Sure. Why the hell not?”

Yeah.

Why the hell not?

Chicken for two? - PART ONE

Heeey! This is a fiction I wrote for a friend of mine, Nina. I hope she'll like it! (:

CHICKEN FOR TWO?

CLOCKS. WIND HOWLING AGAINST THE WINDOW'S GLASS. ALARM CLOCK RINGING. Headache.

DAY ONE

4:50 a.m

I rolled my body on the bed, my eyes shut close while I've groped through my cupboard to find the snooze button on the damned alarm clock. When I finally found it, I snarled when my fingers couldn't reach the fucking button. Angrily, I had to sit up, groggily from sleep and dizzy from the alcohol, and I finally taped off the alarm clock, with so much strength the device fell on the floor.

I didn't care. As long as I could have silence once again, everything was fine.

At least I hope so.

With my head buzzing out of pain, I tried to make out what was going on around me. Slowly and slowly, I could understand and remember that I was on my bedroom, and things were all scattered on the floor – like always -; CD's, records, books, clothes, underwear, papers and newspapers. I wasn't usually messy and stuff, but the past months I haven't had time to do anything. With three jobs to endure, I didn't have time left for me.

I got out of bed, still groggily, and tried to find my jeans. I found it underneath a pile of books and I put them on, passing the tiny hallway that lead to the living room – kitchen and a small (almost like a cubicle) bathroom. I didn't have much money to afford a comfortable home, but I didn't stay long in it, so it didn't bother that much. I spend most of time away, anyway.

Opening my bathroom door, standing right on front of me was the reflex of the mirror. There I was, a skinny, tall and fair haired Glasgow nobody; with dark circles under green eyes that looked so tired and worn; the hair, messy and disgusting; veins popping out from the extremely long arms and my bones ribs appearing on my thorax.

Hi, my name is Alex Kapranos, and I'm a complete mess.

5:45 a.m.

As soon as I arrived work, I already received tons to do: clean the kitchen which was dirty like somebody had overturned cans and cans of trash on it, and also mudd -, wash the dishes – I've never seen such a huge pile! Seriously, if those plates fell on top of me, RIP Alexander Paul Huntley Kapranos, and his remains would never be found – put the dishes into the cupboards, everything organized – again, have you seen the size of that pile? This would take hours! - AND clean the restaurant before a single costumer would enter.

HELLO, there is something called time, could you please stop it? Thank you very much.

I wasn't going to be able to do that in only two hours, especially in the state I was – hangover. I feel like I could throw up over those plates or the kitchen tiles and then I would have more work to do. However, I must stay optmist and obey what my boss was telling me too; otherwise I would get fired. And I wasn't in a good financial situation to be fired out of my job.

I grabbed the broomstick on the small closet there was outside of the restaurant, and some other cleaning material, along with my apron and gloves and started working. With a song in my mind, and humming it, I finished cleaning the kitchen AND the restaurant withing almost one hour, and now it was time to face the monster pile of dishes.

Oh, damn, I could feel my stomach rolling inside of me.

And the last thing I remembered was my boss yelling and firing me because I've thrown up on those plates.

7:23 p.m.

Ok, I was fired from one job, but I still had two more, remember?

I shivered out of cold while the freezing wind blowed against my face; my nose was already insensible. I searched through my pockets the key to the night club, and I found it underneath a lot of useless things that were inside it. Still trembling of cold, I opened the door quickly so that I could get inside – and as soon as I stepped inside the club, I felt a rush of hot air relaxing my body once again. I tapped my nose instinctively, and I felt it slowly getting back to conscience again.

You're late, Alex”, Selene reproved, while she was drying the cups with a rather old and dirty handkerchief. “Get to work quickly, Ok?”

I know, sorry”, I said to my boss, looking down, and I hurried to get behind the bar. I put away my jacket and coat and went to Selene's side, to help her to organize the drinks and the cups. “Do you need any more help, Selene?”

Selene sighed and closed her eyes, rubbing her neck.

There's this new girl, she's a newbie. Help her if she needs something, Ok? I don't want plates and cups breaking on her first day here”

Sure, Selene”, I nodded to her and I kept on organizing, and when we finally finished our work, the backdoor opened and Bob Hardy come from it, with a broom on his hands and he started sweeping the floor. “Hi-ah, Party Hardy!”

Bob turned around and waved at me, never stopping his work.

Hello, mistah Alex”, he said, with a crooked smile on his face. “You're late”

I know, the boss have already said that to me... I had a tough day today”, I said, with a rather childish smile on my space when Selene sent me another reproving look. “I know you love me, Selene”

Selene rolled her eyes and threw the handkerchief on my face, and then showing me her tongue after.

And I still don't know why I still let you work here, you're too annoying for my liking”, she said in a sarcastic tone. “And its Miss Castañeda for you”

She winked at me and passed through the backdoor, leaving me there with a foolish smile on my face. Yes, if you're wondering, we have already slept together. A long time ago. Years ago, actually. But it was just one of those casual sex nights, like one night stand.

Ok, she was the woman who I lost my virginity to.

When I was eighteen.

Yeah. Ouch.

However, he were friends since – all those flirtation that we had between us was just a joke between two friends, and nothing more. I have insisted on something more, but she didn't wanted – so I respected her and I backed off. Now, we are friends and she's my boss while I'm her employee.

In a sick, perverted and twisted mind that would be hot. But I'm not like that anymore – at least I hope so.

However, in the next few seconds, I wasn't able to think straight. The air escaped from my lungs, the floor underneath my feet rumbled and I've lost any sense of direction and conscience I had – it was just me and the space.

There, in front of me, there was one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen in my life.

She wasn't like a supermodel, with those curvilinear body and the bright blue eyes – her simplicity and her humbleness were what made my heart take a leap.

She was short, slim, with big brown eyes and curly hair that were falling like waves on her shoulder, which were always falling off on front of her eyes and from her ponytail – she was wearing a miniskirt – the uniform of the bar – revealing her tan and long legs. She was a bit clumsy, and when I saw that she was about to knock down the tray with all it's contains, and I hurried to her side to help her before she would break everything.

Here, let me help you”, I offered my help, getting to her side quickly and taking the tray full of cups from her hands.

I put the tray on a table near, and the girl thanked me.

Oh, thank you very much! I think I won't be able to do a good work on this killer heels”, she said, pointing at his shoes, that were way too tall for her to handle. “I don't know how Selene can handle those monsters...”

She finally looked at me, and we both felt eletric shocks from our gaze to the end of our toes. Like someone has plugged in a socket inside of bath tub – thousands of volts traveled in light speed through our body – just by one look.

Hm... Hi, my name is Alex”, I've managed to say without stuttering.

The girl smiled again, and after she took her heels out, she made a relieved face and shook my hand – if electric shocks had already passed through my body just by a simple gaze, imagine when my skin softly touched her!

Hi, my name is Nina”

DAY TWO

3:47 a.m.

Have you ever read any book by Edgar Allan Poe, the Father of all cop romance? Where there are psychopaths or something alike? Have you ever seen any movie by Hitchcock? Especially that one where's the crazy bloke tries to kill a woman with a dagger while she's showering?

Well, that was how I was felling.

Ooops! No, I wasn't feeling like killing anyone – gosh, I barely could hurt someone with my weak body, imagine trying to kill someone? - I'm refeering of that crazy-psycho-mental-weirdness on the psychopaths and stalkers minds. When they need something, they just see what they want, and nothing more.

And that was the way I felt about Nina (in a non-psycho-stalker way.).

I couldn't stop thinking about her, and she was all I could see. Yeah, I know, a bit too cliché, but it was true.

4:12 a.m.

Oh well. I can't sleep. Hooray.

4:23 a.m.

I could remember her smile during all night at the night club. She was horribly clumsy on those high heels, falling and tripping almost every time. And there I was to hold her before she would fall flat on the floor.

4:59 a.m.

Great. This girl is leaving me with insomnia.

5:17 a.m.

Maybe the reason of me not sleeping and the never ending thoughts about Nina are caused by the fact I haven't dated someone in months...

...And why every single bit of my life simply sucks?

6:35 a.m

WHY IN HELL CAN'T I SLEEP?

6:43 a.m.

Zzzzzz....

DAY THREE

7:00 p.m.

You've arrived in time today, Mr. Kapranos”

Selene smiled at me with her childish tone and told me to organize the tables and to help Bob on the cleaning. Of course I had arrived earlier today – I wanted to see Nina. I needed to see her, I haven't see her in hours and that was already making me nervous.

Oh wait – I am indeed sounding a bit psycho.

...ALEX!”, someone yelled right next to me. I turned around, puzzled, encountering Bob. “I 've been calling you for like, two minutes, and you haven't heard me! Are you alright, mate?”

I nodded to him. Wow, she wasn't causing me any good.

There's just... A lot in my mind right now.”

You look terrible!” Bob said, pointing at the extreme dark circles under my eyes, in contrast with my pale-white-like-marble skin.

I chuckled and rolled my eyes, taking the broomstick off his hands.

Thanks for the compliments, Bob-o” I started sweeping the floor, while Bob was standing right on my side, with his eyebrows raised. “I just didn't have a nice time of sleep, ok? I have a lot in my mind right now.”

Selene appeared again at the bar, and she kept on glancing both of us with her chocolate-brow eyes. I started wondering if she had any idea of what was going on – maybe my drooling face for Nina was a bit obvious.

Nevertheless, she stood still and quiet.

Like what?”

I was fired from a job a couple days ago and rent and the bills are coming this week, Ok?”, I answered, a bit grumpy. And that was partially true. “And The Amphateameanies aren't making much success as I hoped.”

Just chill, Alex.”, Bob said, putting his hand on my shoulder. “One day, everything will be better. Wasn't you planning to start a new band soon? As soon as you find a drummer?”

Well... That is what I hope.”

I left my mind to wonder – a dream I already had for years; a band of my own where we would play exactly what we wanted. And of course, we would be a hit.

8:46 p.m.

I kept glancing at the doors. Where in hell was Nina? Wasn't she coming to work today? Was she sick? What happened? Was she Ok?

Oh, remind me again why I am acting like a psycho.

She's not coming today, Alex” I heard Selene's voice coming from behind the bar.

What...?”, damn, I was really that obvious.

Don't lie to me, honey. It's already obvious you like her – you didn't stop drooling for her the other day.” Selene said, shouldering. “She quit”

My heart took a leap. Again, that feeling of the floor rumbling beneath my feet, and I was without air again.

She what?”

Oh no. I couldn't believe this.

She quit.” Selene repeated. “She said she couldn't handle the heels and this place, and then she quit.”

Ouch. Why those words hurt me so bad?
